Colombia Succumbs in 9 Hours... Negotiations Settled with 'High Tariffs'

Utilizing the 'Tariff First, Negotiate Later' Card

Targeting EU, China, Canada... Announcing Comprehensive Tariff Imposition

President Donald Trump declared a 'tariff war' against the world just one week after taking office, stepping up his threats. However, analysts suggest he is using this as a 'negotiation card' for diplomatic and security issues without announcing any concrete tariff imposition plans.

"Tariffs as a Negotiation Tool and Punishment Card"

On the 26th (local time), President Trump announced immediate retaliation with tariffs and visa and financial sanctions after Colombia refused to allow a plane carrying Colombian nationals illegally residing in the U.S. to land. Through his social media platform 'Truth Social,' Trump stated, "We will impose an emergency 25% tariff on Colombian imports to the U.S., increasing it to 50% after one week."

When President Trump played the 'high tariff imposition' card, Colombia, which had refused to accept immigrants, succumbed in about 9 hours. Subsequently, the White House announced that Colombia agreed to the U.S. demands, and the tariff imposition was put on hold.

The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported, "Just as President Trump secured Colombia's agreement to accept illegal immigrants through actual tariff imposition, he may formalize the 'tariff first, negotiate later' approach to extract concessions from Mexico and Canada by imposing tariffs."

According to the WSJ, a senior administration official said this situation proves that President Trump views tariffs as an "effective negotiation tool" and an "effective punishment card against countries that do not follow his agenda."

Simultaneous Impact on Major Countries like China and EU... Expanding Tariff Front

Since his first administration, President Trump has imposed tariffs on steel and aluminum against Canada, Mexico, and the European Union (EU). He mentioned that as early as next month, he would start imposing a 10% tariff on Chinese imports and a 25% tariff on Canadian and Mexican imports until they properly control immigration.

On the second day of his term, the 21st (local time), he announced tariffs on the EU and China starting from the 1st of next month. He specifically mentioned the EU, saying, "The EU is in a very bad situation," and "Strict tariffs are the only way to achieve fairness."

There are speculations that tariffs on foreign semiconductors, pharmaceuticals, and steel will also be implemented. According to AFP, on the 27th (local time), President Trump stated at the Republican House Conference in Miami, Florida, "Tariff imposition could start in the very near future," and "This is a measure to bring essential production back to the U.S." He emphasized, "If you don't want to pay tariffs, you should build factories in the U.S.," and "Tariffs will be imposed on items needed by our military, such as steel, copper, and aluminum."
