Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada, President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico

Declare readiness to respond... Criticism from major US media

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stated on the 1st (local time) that "Canada did not want this, but we are ready," after US President Donald Trump signed an executive order imposing a 25% tariff.

Prime Minister Trudeau posted on X (formerly Twitter) shortly after President Trump's signing, confirming that "the US will impose a 25% tariff on most Canadian products and 10% on energy starting the 4th." He added, "I met with governors and the cabinet today and will soon speak with President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico."

Initially, Prime Minister Trudeau had scheduled a press conference for 6 PM local time, but replaced the first announcement with a social media post at 7:36 PM.

Major US media outlets have criticized President Donald Trump's decision, stating that he is using tariffs as an economic attack without justification.

President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico also declared, "When we negotiate and talk with other countries, we always move forward with our heads held high and never bow down."

The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) editorial stated, "President Trump plans to impose a 25% tariff on Canada and Mexico without any reason," calling it "the most foolish trade war in history." WSJ noted, "Even setting aside China, there is no convincing justification for Trump's economic attack on neighboring countries," adding, "Drugs seem to be just an excuse. Trump has made it clear that he prefers tariffs themselves."

The New York Times (NYT) criticized the tariff measures, stating, "For President Trump, tariffs are not a means but an end." NYT pointed out, "In modern times, tariffs have almost always been used as a means of negotiation," and noted that "the reason the tariffs imposed on Mexico, Canada, and China are special is that Trump does not seem interested in pursuing negotiations."

Bloomberg highlighted concerns that "Trump's tariffs could disrupt the tightly integrated oil market in North America and raise gasoline prices for American drivers." NBC News also reported concerns that "new tariffs could raise prices for cars, electronics, and lumber, potentially putting a brake on the economy."
