OpenAI and SoftBank to Build Japan's AI Infrastructure
OpenAI is set to develop a generative artificial intelligence (AI) dedicated device to replace smartphones and its own semiconductor.
Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, revealed this plan in an interview with Japan's Nihon Keizai Shimbun (Nikkei) published on the 3rd. He evaluated the AI model of Chinese AI startup DeepSeek, which shocked the global AI industry, as "not new."
Altman commented on DeepSeek's recently released AI model, saying, "The performance is not new," and added, "OpenAI has had models of this level before, and we will continue to make better models in the future."
DeepSeek recently introduced AI models 'DeepSeek-V3' and 'DeepSeek-R1'. These models are evaluated as threatening frontrunners like OpenAI with relatively low-cost semiconductors and small-scale infrastructure.
OpenAI and Microsoft (MS) are investigating whether DeepSeek collected OpenAI data without permission for AI model training.
OpenAI is developing AI devices in collaboration with former Apple designer Jony Ive. It is expected to take several years for a prototype to emerge.
Altman stated about the AI dedicated device, "It will be made through collaboration," and added, "AI fundamentally changes the way we interact with computers, so a new device is needed. Voice operation will be key."
Nikkei interpreted this as OpenAI aiming to dominate the AI market not only in software but also in hardware, with ChatGPT, used by more than 300 million users worldwide, and optimized devices.
Altman mentioned about the development of semiconductors related to generative AI, "Our company is handling it." Nikkei reported that Altman avoided detailed comments on the self-developed semiconductors but is expected to use its design products in data centers.
OpenAI has decided to build AI infrastructure with Japan's SoftBank Group (SBG). They plan to construct data centers for AI development across Japan. Additionally, they will build power generation facilities to supply electricity to the data centers.
The two companies plan to hold a meeting with over 500 Japanese companies in Tokyo today, inviting participation from businesses in a wide range of industries such as transportation, pharmaceuticals, finance, manufacturing, and logistics.
They will also develop industrial AI using each company's data. Altman, who is visiting Japan, will share the AI cooperation plan between the two companies with Masayoshi Son, SBG Chairman, in a meeting with Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba at the Tokyo Prime Minister's Office this afternoon.
Nikkei explained that this can be seen as the Japanese version of the AI infrastructure investment announced by OpenAI and SBG last month. OpenAI announced last month that it established an AI joint venture Stargate with SoftBank and Oracle and plans to invest over $500 billion (about 729 trillion won) over the next four years to build AI data centers in the U.S.
