On the 13th (local time), U.S. President Donald Trump announced a press conference to declare reciprocal tariffs on various countries.
President Trump stated through his social media platform Truth Social, "It's been a great three weeks, perhaps the best ever. But today is an important day. Reciprocal Tariffs!! Make America Great Again!!"
In a subsequent post, President Trump added, "Press conference on reciprocal tariffs will be held at 1 PM (3 AM KST on the 14th) in the Oval Office (White House office)."
The previous day, White House spokesperson Caroline Leavitt had stated during a press briefing that the reciprocal tariffs announcement would be made "before Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's White House visit on the 13th (US Eastern Time)."
Reciprocal tariffs mean that the U.S. will impose tariffs on goods from other countries at the same rate those countries apply to U.S. goods.
While the exact form and extent remain unclear at present, there is consensus that it will significantly impact U.S. and global trade.
Since taking office last month and intensifying the trade war, President Trump has been pressuring trading partners with high tariffs and pursuing resolution of trade imbalances.
Following the 10% additional tariff on China on the 4th, he decided to impose a 25% tariff without exception on imported steel and aluminum starting from the 12th of next month.
